[ Personality ] :
Tsubaki Kasugano is the leader, at least in name, of the Sacred Eye cult—a religion with over 1,000 followers. She is the sixth future diary holder in a deadly survival game set up by Deus, where the winner becomes God in his place and has the ability to change and shape the world to their liking. As suggested by the term “survival game,” in order to win, she must do just that: survive, and kill the other players using the power of her diary—or be killed herself. In her case, her diary is called the [Clairvoyance Diary], which has the power to report the future as seen by all her followers. It is far reaching and not limited by distance, so events all around the temple are recorded, giving her a lot of information to work with—which can be an asset or a hindrance, depending on the situation.
This power certainly helps to make up for the poor eyesight she was born with, as she states that she cannot even see past her hands; but because of it, she has basically been imprisoned on the temple grounds, never to leave. Since her parents, the previous cult leaders, passed away in an accident, no one was able to stop the new founder, Funatsu, from resurrecting it in his own image—allowing Tsubaki to be used for sex, abused by the men for the sake of their religious activities. She endures this on a daily basis, stating that her only joy at the time was recording the stories of her visitors and followers, before her observations finally turned into her future diary, giving her clairvoyant powers.
Because of the traumatic past she has lived, Tsubaki’s view on the world is grim. She distinguishes between the Seen and Unseen Worlds, and pinpoints the Unseen World as the source of all her suffering; though you wouldn’t even know how much she has suffered, at first glance. She proves herself to be quite manipulative: at first acting cheerful and pleasant, especially around Yukiteru when he and Yuno arrive at the temple. Tsubaki plays innocent, asking for help because of the DEAD END flag that appeared on her diary, even offering them Minene (the ninth diary holder, whom they’ve been looking for) in exchange. She openly says that she doesn’t even want to become God, and thus has no intentions to kill them, because she considers herself God’s messenger—and to become god would be blasphemous. This is all to gain their trust, and at least for Yukiteru, it mostly works.
There are little hints dropped, however, that she is not necessarily being sincere. From the very beginning before they even meet, she calls Yuno a ‘nuisance,’ and eventually warns Yukiteru that she will bring about his doom. They are accusatory towards each other, and even before Tsubaki’s betrayal, it is clear that they do not and will not get along. Tsubaki had played the maiden in distress for the entirety of their visit, painting herself as someone who needs to be protected from an intruder (the twelfth diary holder) trying to end her life. In reality, however, this was actually an elaborate setup so that she could kill both Yukiteru and Yuno, with the twelfth simply getting in her way. Her true motivation is to become God and eliminate the ‘Unseen World,’ which took away everything she cared about—including a single, lost handball which she treasured dearly as a memento from her mother.
A lot of bitterness and negativity has built up within her over the years, and it all comes out in the battle against Yukiteru and Yuno. It is clear how heartless she truly is, when she has no qualms using Yuno as bait, after Yukiteru runs away—telling her followers to “take turns” with her, to make her suffer as she did. To use her. She is actually surprised when Yukiteru comes to her rescue, admitting that she did not expect him to, which shows how low her opinion on people really is. The scene is particularly sad, because he actually comes to rescue Yuno with Tsubaki’s precious handball in hand, having found it when he was hiding—but he then proceeds to use it against her. He throws it up in the air to distract her many, many followers in the room, rendering her diary useless and effectively killing her. She is even seen crying as she disappears along with her broken diary, lamenting how she found it “too late”…
From this one can see that, like any good character, Tsubaki has another side to her as well; a softer side. Though her kindness towards Yukiteru and Yuno was faked, it is shown in Mirai Nikki: Paradox, an alternate timeline to the series, that she can indeed be genuine about it. In this reality, Akise Aru infiltrates the Sacred Eye Cult instead of Yukiteru, with Muru Muru in tow. Because of his natural curiosity as a self-proclaimed detective, he actually finds out the true nature of this cult, and realizes rather quickly that Tsubaki is trapped there and how unhappy she is—so he attempts to rescue her and show her the outside world, saying that she can be saved. Not only that, but he also he helps unravel the mystery behind Tsubaki’s parents and their death, which has actually been on her mind for quite some time.
She has long suspected Funatsu, the new cult leader, of killing her parents in that accident, and this is why she does not want to leave and fall out of his favor. She wants to overthrow him, and she needs his trust in order to do that: showing that she is manipulative, even here in the alternate timeline. She is distrusting, even of Akise, until he offers to help her solve the case, and even then, she is shown to have her doubts. When their plan works and Funatsu ends up confessing to murdering her parents, she actually thanks him, rather than lashing out in any violent or angry way—showing that her peace of mind is much more important than any kind of revenge. (That and, the revenge itself already came in the form of his followers learning the truth--)
In conclusion, Tsubaki’s tragic past has led her to have a very jaded view on life. She doesn’t believe in people; she is very distrusting and many of her feelings (particularly negative ones) are bottled up, resulting in explosive displays when she shows them. However, as Mirai Nikki: Paradox shows, she is capable of being happy under the right conditions, and she is not always as heartless and cruel as the main storyline would have us believe.
[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
Tsubaki’s Clairvoyance Diary is very powerful; allowing her to monitor what is going on at all times in the Sacred Eye temple through the eyes of her followers. It is far reaching, and it is definitely a huge plus for her to have access to such a valuable information source about her surroundings. As Twelfth and Yukiteru both demonstrate, though, it definitely has its weaknesses; namely that the diary can be easily manipulated and flooded with useless information—rendering it useless. In addition, her poor eyesight is a drawback in and of itself, making it hard for her to navigate her way around, even with help. When Yukiteru and Yuno are running away from her brainwashed followers, dragging her with them, she is shown bumping into a wall as they round a corner—and blames Yuno for it, insisting that she did it on purpose.
Using her diary however, she can make up for this somewhat, as she is (perhaps ironically) known as “All Seeing” because of it. Also, it is not demonstrated, but it can be insinuated that she has heightened or very good hearing to make up for her poor eyesight as well. She’s proven herself to be very manipulative and smart, too, given the right motivations; and since she is very wary of people (particularly men, I would think), she won’t be so easily manipulated herself. Especially in a new place such as Vatheon, she would be on her guard and watching out for people trying to take advantage of her—and though this would probably fade as time passes, it’s a good trait to have on unfamiliar ground.
[ Other Important Facts ] :
I think I covered everything, but feel free to poke me about anything I may have forgotten o7
[ Sample ] :
I-I’m sorry—
[Tsubaki is visibly in a huff, as she darts away from the stand. Something in between anger and embarrassment displays plain on her face; and it perhaps has to do with the local she can hear, laughing behind her as she goes, clinging to the towel that she’d been given like it was some lifeline. ‘It’ll work better than that shirt you just grabbed,’ he said—how was she supposed to know? She can barely see where she’s going, after all, which…okay, probably makes this whole running away thing a bad idea, but still.
—Heh!
Incidentally, he’d told her it was okay to keep the shirt as well, which was strange. But she didn’t question it at the time. She simply wanted to get to a quiet place to think for now, about exactly where she is and how she got there. Because this isn’t the Sacred Eye temple, is it?
That detective…Akise Aru. Somehow he’d set her free. There are no longer any mysteries tying her to the cult, forcing her to stay; and she was glad that she could repay him, at least in part. But at the same time, she didn’t think she’d be leaving so soon…
So where exactly did she wind up?
She doesn’t know, but she’ll find out. Even if it means maybe asking one of these many voices she’s hearing right now, the blur of faces around her…
Who are they all?]
